ESPN commentators pick Wisconsin over Tennessee

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

Two of the three commentators on ESPN’s “Bowl Mania” show aired December 8, 2007 picked the Wisconsin Badgers to defeat the Tennessee Volunteers in the 2008 Outback Bowl.  While they said the game was among their “least confident” picks among other 2008 Bowl Game prognostications, it was uplifting to see Wisconsin being given the nod in the contest.

One reason stated twice:  Wisconsin’s past success against SEC in bowl games - two consecutive wins in 2006 and 2007 over Auburn and Arkansas respectively ( both CapitalOne Bowl games ).

If Missouri is looking for advice on how to deal with Arkansas in the 2008 Cotton Bowl, they should review the 2007 CapitalOne Bowl where the Wisconsin defense made Darren McFadden a non issue in the game ( I believe gaining less than 100 yards ), and holding the Razorbacks to only 14 points in the game.

Badgers accept 2008 OutBack Bowl bid

Sunday, December 2nd, 2007

The University of Wisconsin has accepted an invitation to play in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida on January 1, 2008.  Some interesting stats:

  • Wisconsin finished 9-3, winning four out of their last five games
  • Top 20 BCS ranking
  • Badgers have been in 13 Bowl games in their past 15 seasons
  • This will be ”America’s Team” sixth straight Bowl game appearance

Travis Beckum left the game on the last game of the season ( Wisconsin vs. Minnesota ) – I am hoping he is back to 100% by Bowl game day.  He is considered by many to be the best TE in college football.  Tyler Donovan will need a “go to” receiver when they face their SEC opponent ( to be named shortly ) on New Years Day.

Congratulations to Athletic Director (and former coach) Barry Alvarez and Coach Bret Bielema on the Bowl bid and their effective leadership, and to the entire team for another exciting successful season ( and a win over the SEC on January 1, 2008 ).  Go Red !
