Coach Wooden

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

I was talking with the “Sports Savant” today at lunch about College Basketball.  He informed me that Georgetown and Mississippi State would win today in the “Wooden Classic”.   When I tuned in at halftime of the first game, there was a story on John Wooden and his thoughts on life and why he was such a successful coach.  His seven point creed reminded me of the messages my Grandparents shared with me when growing up.  I thought I would share John Wooden’s seven point creed here as it can help to have some “gutter guards” on the lane of life:

  1. Be true to yourself
  2. Make each day your Masterpiece
  3. Help others
  4. Drink deeply from good books, particularly the Bible
  5. Make friendship a fine art
  6. Build a shelter against a rainy day
  7. Pray for guidance, and give thanks for your blessings everyday

I might add “you can’t go too wrong by doing the right thing”, and “The secret to success:  Hard Work ! ”

Additionally, when reading his web-site , I found his “Pyramid Of Success” a compelling framework.  I also connected with his Maxim “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail”.

By the way – both Georgetown and Mississippi State won ( the “Sports Savant” strikes again ).
